Meet Shubhangi Choudhary, UX Designer at Monsoonfish. She has been with Monsoonfish since June 2020, crafting delightful user journeys for many recent projects. As we continue the blog series, we sit down with Shubhangi to understand better her journey as a designer, what inspires her, how she goes about doing what she does best, and her spheres of interest beyond work. Let’s get started!

Q: What made you want to become a designer?

Shubhangi: I did not anticipate becoming a designer; it just sort of landed up on my lap. I think the starting point was my interest in Art since high school — I was taking extra classes with an artist, learning oil painting. I was building my skills with colours, textures, and form. It so happened that my mother suggested applying for design schools, and I entered NIFT, after which I explored further in visual communication.

Q: How has your journey with Monsoonfish been like so far?

Shubhangi: The role at Monsoonfish is my first full-time job after finishing my Master’s degree. It’s been such a warm and friendly space to work at. My colleagues and my seniors have been extremely supportive and I’m clearly enjoying my time here. There is a diverse range of clients due to which I get to explore new areas of learning and accelerating my growth.

Q: Out of the projects you’ve tackled thus far, which one challenged you the most and why?

Shubhangi: There’s this cyber-security platform project (Binary Flux) that I have been working on, which is quite complex for my background. But I guess I’m getting a better hang of it with each passing day.

Q: What’s your approach every time a project comes to you? Is there a specific process cycle that you follow?

Shubhangi: Yes. Firstly, there’s a lot of research alongside building background knowledge about the brief. This is often followed by lengthy discussions and brainstorming on concepts with the clients and the design team. Once we reach a consensus on the best approach, the project starts to take shape. Post that, it is reiterated based on feedback.

Q: What, in your eyes, is the greatest purpose of design?

Shubhangi: I think the greatest purpose of design is to solve a problem and have a function.

Q: Did the recent pandemic change your style of work? If yes, how?

Shubhangi: I am happy to be home with my parents, but the distinction between work and personal life has blurred big time during the pandemic.

Q: What developments in the design world are you looking forward to the most?

Shubhangi: Diversity and inclusivity in the design world are two things that will change its course for the better.

Q: Are there any brand favourites when it comes to design?

Shubhangi: I am always in awe of the design efforts by Pentagram and DNAD (Design and Art Direction).

Q: Tell us about your other spheres of interest. What keeps you going?

Shubhangi: As part of my daily routine, I look forward to working out. It helps me wind up my day and keeps me driven. I absolutely enjoy travelling/backpacking, however, this year hasn’t been very generous in that aspect.
